Levels of Addiction Care

Michigan providers offer a full continuum of care — from medically supervised detox through long-term outpatient and sober living. The right level depends on your substance, your history, your medical and mental-health needs, and your home environment.

3–10 days
Medical Detox

24-hour medically supervised withdrawal management with medication support, especially critical for alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids. Withdrawal from some substances can be fatal without medical supervision.

28–90+ days
Residential / Inpatient Rehab

Live on-site in a structured environment while receiving daily individual and group therapy, medical care, and skill-building. Best for early recovery, severe use disorders, and unstable home environments.

4–6 weeks
Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

A daily program (typically 5–6 hours, 5 days a week) providing intensive treatment while you return home each evening. A common step-down from residential or step-up from outpatient.

8–12 weeks
Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

9–15 hours of structured group and individual therapy per week — usually 3 days a week, mornings or evenings. Compatible with work, school, and family responsibilities.

Ongoing
Outpatient & Aftercare

Weekly therapy, medication management, and peer support. The backbone of long-term recovery — most people benefit from at least a year of outpatient support after higher levels of care.

Months to years
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

FDA-approved medications — buprenorphine (Suboxone), methadone, naltrexone (Vivitrol) for opioids; naltrexone, acamprosate, disulfiram for alcohol — combined with counseling. MAT dramatically reduces overdose death.

3–12+ months
Sober Living

Structured, substance-free housing that bridges residential treatment and independent living. Often paired with IOP or outpatient care.
